Bissell Design has been apart of the Community Associations Institute for close to 7 years. Being a member of Coachella Vally and proud educated business partner we also work closely with our hometown San Diego.
Being the premier provider of education, advocacy, and resources for Community Associations calls for help from its members each year within their chapters. Giving a clear idea of what is needed in the chapter does not come easily. Making sure all the members know what is planned throughout the year and how they can get involved all come together with many volunteers and office staff. This year we have already been planning for 2018 and have presented the 2018 Marketing plan for San Diego and the Coachella Vally is coming shortly after.
Bissell Design is always looking to help CAI keep cohesive branding across chapters and give them their own unique feel. This year SD chose to focus on the beautiful Balboa Park in San Diego as a reference to their location and pride in the city. Here are some images and a link to the PDF itself.
We are proud of our clients and the work they do to better serve their communities and the world we live in. Each year many of our clients host events to raise money or just to get together for some face-to-face networking opportunities. Promoting an event can be key to its success. Here are some of the events we have designed promotional materials for.
Community Associations Institute (CAI) is an organization dedicated to building better communities by providing education and resources to volunteer homeowners who govern community associations and the professionals who support them.
Having worked with the Coachella Valley chapter of CAI for the past six years, we are excited to be a part of their recent move and much needed expansion. The chapter has been growing by leaps and bounds and we have been so happy walking with them during this time of rapid growth. It will be amazing to see members having their own space to gather for meetings, a designated boardroom, educational facilities and more.
We help with CAI-CV's branding and the building is an expansion of who they are. We look forward to helping wherever we are needed.
The article below is pulled from the CAI-V Quorum Magazine 9/2017 issue (page 12). You can find the whole issue at this link.
After more than twenty-five years in the same office suite, CAI-CV is making a historic move to a new professional office building near the corner of Cook Street and Gerald Ford. For the past two years, CAI-CV has been looking for a new space large enough to house a classroom. “We finally found the right location,” said CAI-CV President Phyllis Harkins, “CAI-CV’s primary mission of education will be taken to a new level with this move.”
The Chapter’s new address will be 75410 Gerald Ford Drive, Suite 102, Palm Desert, CA 92211.
The new suite is twice the size of the current space and the classroom will hold 40 to 50 students. The Board has already scheduled more than twenty classes for the new classroom in 2018. The classes will include more education for managers, business partners, and community board members. A new CAI nationally approved two-hour “Board Basic Training” course for Homeowner Leaders (NEW NAME – SEE ARTICLE ON PAGE 15) is in the development stage and will be offered free to board members throughout the Valley monthly during the season.
The buildout plans are in the drawing stage for City approval and construction will begin in a few weeks. Business partners who are interested in donating time, materials or expertise to the moving project, you are needed. Please contact the CAI-CV office if you would like to help. The move is expected to take place in October or November. We will keep you informed through Quorum and E-blasts.
When I was starting out in graphic design, I was told I should find an industry I liked and focus on it to find my “niche.” I did find my niche at my first job and soon learned it was too limiting. A good graphic design company should be able to create concepts and designs that are a unique fit to each client. Some clients require a clean, crisp look, where others may be best served with designs that are packed full and heavy with color. Large corporations need a different approach than start-up companies who just want to get “off the ground.” Designing for a wide range of clients helps keep the creative juices flowing every day. Here are some of the projects I have enjoyed working on in the last few months.
New branding does not always require a complete change of direction from the old design. Some logos are great ideas to begin with, and by adding input from different directions, we can create a stronger brand image. Here is a rebrand that helps better convey the message this client wants to communicate.
We all agreed the old logo needed to be simplified. We started by using a more compact font for the smaller text and removing the word, "Group" (the client determined it wasn't necessary).
By simplifying, we were able to add more detail (and thus more interest) into the logo without taking away from the strength of the brand. The logos can vary from the more detailed look to the very simple bold black. Each design allows the client more flexibility as they use them in letterhead, ads and other branding material.
In the end, we designed black, white, dark-in beveled, and light-in beveled versions of their logo to meet all their needs. They have been getting lots of positive feedback on what the company is doing with the new design.
We are excited to see them prosper and looking great as they move forward.
We were so happy to be able to let a beginner artist help with an amazing project. Emily Hsieh started an Instagram feed as @thehsiehtype and it looked like a perfect fit for the banner we were working on for Su Refugio's women's conference, "Legado de Amor" (Legacy of Love). Check out what she has done with very little direction from us.
She sent this back as a starting point after one of our first phone calls.
Getting things lined up, she was able to shine. It was really coming along and the client was happy.
We were so happy with all the amazing elements Emily pulled together to capture the theme of the conference, we asked for more small details that we could use in other places down the road. We added them in here and think she did a great job.
For Su Rufugio and the women they help, we hope that Emily has blessed you as much as she has us. We think she has so much potential and want to encourage her to continue designing her typography, letting people see not only a beautiful font, but the beautiful message behind it.
Thank you Emily @thehsiehtype for all your hard work!
We had a great time at the event. It was amazing to be involved with such a great company as HomeWord. They help families, marriages, and church leaders. Around 800 people signed up to attend this year.
The workbook was one of the many projects we helped put together for the event. It's a great tool to evaluate your current relationships and how to improve them. For us, it's knowing we are able to be a part of bringing couples closer. It is so great to see the impact HomeWord and Azusa Pacific University are having on the lives of families.
We hope that those who read this will also consider coming to the conference next year. Please check out www.refreshingyourmarriage.com to sign up. As a company, we look forward to what we can do to improve and bring a whole new experience to those who attend.
See you there.
This weekend is going to be a great time for dozens of married couples to refresh their relationships. Our friends at www.HomeWord.com always do an outstanding job of encouraging people to grow, speaking to key issues that form a solid foundation for a healthy marriage. We help brand the conference and have a heart for those who attend. Looking forward to an excellent time at RYM this year!
Three Phase Electric is in the business of determining the special lighting needs of community associations and providing them with superior lighting maintenance, lowering costs and helping keep communities safe. They agreed to step out of their comfort zone when they redesigned the theme of their trade booth for an expo in LA, one of the largest events they will attend this year. Coming up with a fun theme and reason for people to visit the booth, and then return bringing others with them, was the key.
Here are photos from the event.
Grabbing visitors' attention and giving them a way to get involved and have fun at the conference was the goal. The way they went about it was to have their team members become Super Heroes. Each Hero had a card with a fun list of their individual super powers and other Heroes they needed to collect.
Here are the rules of the game:
- Spin the wheel, win a Hero Card or Gift Card!
- Then find and return to us all 5 Hero Cards (Manager + Hero Card they won) and you EACH WIN!
- EACH Hero card-holder WINS a Gift Card to Starbucks and
- An entry (1) in our drawing for a Grand Prize $500 VISA GIFT CARD!
Thanks to an amazing team of marketing and design wizards, they pulled this game off perfectly. At Bissell Design Studios Inc., we are excited to see our clients win, and win like Heroes!!
We are close to completing the design and layout for a 1,200-page book.
Good thing for templates and design styles. Separating this project into uniquely designed layouts and getting it to all flow together is a chore. Organization is key.
Helping the client get the details just right can take some time but in the end they are getting exactly what they want.
After the first draft, we realized Pegasus' eyes were looking too much like a horse from the Barbie movies. We were able to make a quick change. No Barbie horses here. Next round will be some work on the back legs.
A great winery is looking into burning their logo into the side of their boxes. Their current logo is based on a painting of Pegasus, one of their favorite prize-winning race horses. The complete image of the horse was not in the painting -- body parts were cut off. We took the existing image from the painting and created a complete one (filling in the missing parts). We think it's going to look great burnt into their boxes. We are all anticipating dramatic results. This is the first draft but it came out better than they expected.
Our good friends at Su Refugio are doing more and more to help orphans and widows around the world. It's exciting to see the lives they are helping to change. We work hard to make it easy for them to look good now while planning for the future.
Many companies and organizations have limited budgets for marketing (especially not-for-profits who spend the bulk of their income on helping others). Or, they are so busy in their ministry that there isn't the time to work on a long-term marketing plan.
A strong brand and custom template work together as a simple and effective solution for any marketing/fundraising piece. The initial design time and expense are well worth it and actually save costs in the future.
Templates are one of the best ways to make anyone's brand more constant. New projects will take less time and money. They will also remain consistent to the brand and therefore familiar to the people they are communicating with. Our plan for each of Su Refugio's ministry brochures uses the same template, changing out the bright colors and dropping in new text and images for new issues. Simple production work.
It may take a little more time and money on the front end of a project, but the benefits -- quick turn-around-time, less expense for future issues and strong, consistent brand recognition -- are worth it.
We took Madison Hsieh to help take photos for July's issue of Quorum Magazine. She is a budding photographer and designer/artist. We have seen great point of focus and balance throughout her photos.
With a little bit of art direction, her photos really hit the mark. She also was a trooper when the air conditioning went out and it was 110 degrees in Palm Desert.
We are excited to see how she uses her creative gifts in the future.
Thanks, Maddie, for all your help. Hope you learned a lot and continue to pursue your passion for photography.
